The Monument is located in the central and western part of the State. From Montrose to the South Rim Entrance, drive east (six miles) on Highway 50 then turn north (five miles). The North Rim may be reached by driving fourteen miles on a graded road from Crawford (County Road 92).
WHEN TO VISIT
Gunnison Point Visitor Center on the South Rim is open intermittently in Winter due to snow. Rim House on the North Rim closed in Winter. Peak visitor month is August. Heavy snow in Winter.

Shadowed depths of this sheer-walled canyon accentuate the darkness of ancient rocks of obscure origin.
Fires are always a peril. Fires are permitted only in campground fireplaces. No pets are permitted in the inner canyon or wilderness area. Keep pets on a leash in the remainder of the area. The Gunnison River is at the bottom of a 2,000 foot, shadowed gorge. Food, supplies, and overnight accommodations may be found in Montrose.
